Summit County Coroner Identifies Victim in Highway 9 Head-On Crash
The Summit County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who died in a head-on crash on Colorado Highway 9 on Jan. 6, as additional details about the incident were released by the Colorado State Patrol.
In an email, Summit County Coroner Amber Flenniken identified the victim as Urbino Amaro Garcia, 21, of Aurora. Garcia was pronounced deceased at the scene following the collision, which occurred approximately 10 miles north of Silverthorne.
According to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol, the crash involved two pickup trucks traveling in opposite directions on Highway 9. A Dodge pickup truck was traveling northbound while a Ford pickup truck was traveling southbound. For reasons still under investigation, the Dodge lost control while traveling northbound and began to rotate into the southbound lane.

The release stated that the Ford pickup was unable to avoid the Dodge and struck the passenger side of the vehicle. Following the impact, both trucks spun off the roadway and came to rest off the side of the highway.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. Authorities have not released information regarding injuries to the other driver involved or whether weather, road conditions, speed, or impairment were factors in the collision.
Colorado State Patrol officials said the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information is encouraged to contact authorities as they continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
